I've always been a carpenter, as long as I can remember-- building things out of wood.
Boxes, benches and speaker cabinets in middle school. Theater set after theater set all through high school and into college. Everything else after that, from 2500 sq/ft commercial photography studios, to sets for commercial advertising shoots, to kitchen remodels, up to whole-house remodels.
Friends observe that I 'edit' wood. Which is probably closer to the truth than they realize-- cutting a 16 foot-long board to length really is similar to cutting a 30-second long “take” to length to fit the needs of an edit. At the end of the day, I’m equally comfortable behind a 12" Dewalt chop saw as an Adobe Premiere or Avid edit station. One form of “cutting” really does inform the other.
